Legends and Rituals of Lumba Rakhi

Raksha Bandhan showcases the everlasting bond between siblings and the love and affection they share. This traditional occasion of Raksha Bandhan has many legends that have come up over the year. As is known, the thread that is tied on the wrist of brothers is a symbol of the vow that the brother has made to protect his sister under every circumstance.

There are many rituals that are followed during the tying of the thread. Just like tying Rakhi to brothers, there is another aspect of Raksha Bandhan which is tying Rakhi to sisters-in-law. This is also a very significant ritual which is celebrated with much enthusiasm. Many communities in India celebrate Rakhi for bhaiya bhabhi.

Legend of Lumba Rakhi

Lumba Rakhi

Lumba Rakhi is a very significant celebration in the Marwari and Rajasthani communities in India. This tradition dates back long ago and has been existent for a long time. Wives are always known as the better halves of their husbands.

The tradition of Lumba Rakhi celebrates the existence and importance of the better halves along with the brothers. It is said that no work would ever be complete if the wife is not a part of it. Since the wife known as the ardhangini or the half of the body of the husband, therefore, no ritual or auspicious event would be considered a success if the wife is not present. Even in pujas, the wife must always sit with the husband for it to be successful and completed properly.

When the sister ties a Rakhi to there, they are also supposed to tie a thread on the bangles of their sisters-in-law. This is because the responsibility for the protection of the sister depends both on the brother and her sister-in-law. The sister wishes for a safe and secure marriage of her bhaiya and bhabhi and in turn, gets the vow of protection from both of them.

Ritual of Lumba Rakhi

There is a similar ritual that is followed during the tying of Lumba on the bhabhi’s bangles, as is followed during tying Rakhi on the brother’s hand. The sister applies tilak on the forehead of her bhabhi. She then ties the Lumba on the bangle of the bhabhi thereby completing the ritual.

If the sister is younger to her bhabhi she seeks blessings by touching her feet. In current times, people hug each other as a form of showing their love and care for each other. There is also an important section of sharing gifts with each other. Not only does the sister buy Rakhi for bhaiya bhabhi she also purchases gifts for both of them. The bhaiya and bhabhi also give gifts to their sister in return to show their love for her.
